The calculation of a crypto surplus value is based on a precise tax rule in France. The method takes into account the total portfolio value at the time of disposal, not only the purchase price and the sale price. It is often this point that surprises investors who hold several cryptocurrency purchases at different dates.
To properly report, you must first identify taxable transactions, then apply the official form and report the result in the correct forms. Here is a simple way to move from your transactions to reliable reporting.
Identify really taxable crypto transactions
Before calculating anything, we must distinguish between the transactions that trigger tax and those that do not trigger tax. That's where most mistakes are played.
Calculation of crypto surplus value
Formula: PV = Net Transfer Price – (Net Acquisition Price × (Net Transfer Price / Global Portfolio Value))
Note: The progressive scale of income tax is not calculated here because it depends on your overall tax situation. The 30% PPU is applied by default.
Taxable transfers
An assignment becomes taxable when a digital asset exits the crypto universe for an external economic value. This is the case when you sell bitcoin, ether or other digital assets for euros, dollars or any other fiat currency. We're talking about cash out.
The purchase of a property or a service with cryptocurrency is also a taxable assignment. Even if no euro arrives in your bank account, you have used your cryptos to get real consideration. The tax administration therefore considers that it is necessary to calculate a gain or loss.
Transactions not immediately taxable
crypto-to-crypt exchange, for example, convert from ETH to SOL or BTC to stablecoin, is generally not taxable at the time of exchange for an individual. However, they remain essential to follow as they change the composition and value of your portfolio.
Better keep Full history your transactions, not just sales in euros. Keep purchases, sales, conversions, transfers between platforms, fees and withdrawals to a private portfolio. Without these elements, the calculation quickly becomes bogged down.
Apply the official formula for calculating crypto surplus value
The tax method is based on a official formula. It does not calculate the line-by-line surplus-value as for a stock purchased and then sold separately. It takes into account the entire digital asset portfolio.
Report your capital gains on digital assets (Form 2086) · Access the official form to report your gains or losses from the disposal of digital assets in accordance with tax legislation.
The formula to know
The official formula is as follows:
Taxable surplus value = Transfer price – (Total net acquisition price x Transfer price / Total portfolio value before transfer)
Every term counts. The sale price is the amount received on sale or the value of the property or service purchased. The total net purchase price is the amount invested in your portfolio, if any, minus the fractions already taken into account in previous transfers. The total portfolio value is the total value of your digital assets just before the sale.
Simple example with a valued portfolio
Suppose you invested 10.000€ total in cryptocurrency. When you sell some of your assets, your crypto wallet is worth 20.000€. You make a transfer of 5.000€.
The calculation becomes: 5,000 – (10.000 x 5,000 / 20,000). The share of acquisition capital to be deducted is therefore 2,500.€. The taxable surplus value spring at 2,500€.
This mechanism avoids the arbitrary choice of which units were sold. It distributes your acquisition price proportionally across the entire portfolio. This makes more sense in tax terms, but it requires a precise valuation at the time of each taxable assignment.
Think in strata rather than in isolated transactions
A good way to understand this calculation is to imagine your portfolio as a series of layers: invested capital, latent gains, fees, and then the liquidity withdrawn at the time of cash out. When you sell 5,000€, you do not only withdraw your winnings or bet. You take a proportional slice overall. This image helps to avoid a frequent error, which is to believe that a partial sale can be treated as a simple repayment of capital until the initial investment has been recovered.
Choose the right tax system: flat tax, scale or professional activity
Once the surplus value is calculated, the applicable tax system must be determined. The most common case is that of the individual investor who makes occasional transfers, but other situations exist.
| Situation | Scheme referred to | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|
| Individual making occasional transfers | Flat tax of 30% or option for progressive scale | Compare the final tax by your tax bracket |
| Small amounts of disposal | Exemption possible under 305€ annual transfers | Threshold on disposals, not only on gain |
| Professional activity | Occupational regime, including micro-BNC or controlled declaration | Analysis by frequency, organization and commitment |
Flat tax or progressive scale
For an individual, the reference tax is often the flat tax of 30%, consisting of 12.8% tax and 17.2% social levies. It has the advantage of being readable. Taxable net capital gain of 2,500€ results in, in principle, a tax of 750€.
The option for progressive scale may be interesting in some cases, especially if your marginal tax rate is low. It does not choose transaction by transaction. She appreciates with all of your tax situation. Some calculations also mention a PPU rate of 31.4%, consisting of 12.8% tax and 18.6% social levies. Always check the rate applicable to your situation when reporting.
Exemption of 305€ Attention to interpretation
The exemption of 305€ refers to annual transfers. This means that it is not enough to have a small surplus value. The total amount of taxable disposals made over the year must be considered. If you exceed this threshold, the report must be treated carefully.
This rule is useful for very small users who have sold a small amount of money on an ad hoc basis, but it does not exempt them from retaining the supporting documents. In case of doubt, it is better to document the amounts rather than reconstruct the historical several years later.
Use simulator, software or spreadsheet without losing control
Manual computing quickly becomes complex as soon as you have multiple platforms, crypto-crypto conversions, fees and transfers. Tools can save you time, provided you understand what they produce.
Online simulator or specialized software
The simulators like those proposed by Orwl or Waltio allow to estimate the cryptic tax from your data. Specialized software can import platform history, reconcile transactions and produce a reportable result.
They are particularly useful if you have done many operations. Their main interest is not only to go faster, but to limit forgetfulness: non-integrated fees, transfer confused with a sale, stablecoin mistreated as a fiat output, or poorly informed portfolio value.
Excel spreadsheet: adapted to simple profiles
A spreadsheet can be enough if you have few operations. As a minimum, provide for the following columns: date, type of transaction, asset sold, sale price, fee, total value of portfolio before sale, total net acquisition price, surplus value or loss value.
The advantage of the spreadsheet is its transparency. You see every step of the calculation. Its disadvantage is the risk of human error, especially if you often change your positions or use several exchanges. In this case, software or professional help can become safer.
Declare its crypto plus-values without forgetting the forms
The calculation is useless if it is not correctly postponed. For occasional divestitures of digital assets, the central form is Form 2086. It details the taxable transactions and the result of the calculation.
The overall income is then reported on the income tax return, in particular in respect of Box 3AN for capital gain or Box 3BN for a loss of value. Some cases may also involve Box 3CN, depending on the nature of the postponement requested.
Checklist before validation
- Check that all crypto to fiat transfers are listed.
- Include purchases of goods or services paid in cryptocurrency.
- Do not declare as taxable simple crypto-to-crypt exchanges, while keeping them in history.
- Control the overall value of the portfolio just before each disposal.
- Compare, if relevant, the flat tax and the progressive scale.
- Report the result of Form 2086 to the correct boxes of the return.
If your activity is more like a professional activity by its frequency, organization or means, do not be content with the individual regime. The concepts of micro-BNC, a reduction of 34% or a controlled declaration can then come into play. In this case, the opinion of a tax adviser or tax lawyer may avoid an erroneous qualification.
The best approach remains simple: keep the history complete, calculate according to the official formula, document assumptions and verify carryovers. In crypto taxation, compliance depends mainly on clean and consistent traceability.
