Double taxation on Trade Republic mainly concerns investors who receive foreign share dividends on a securities account. The mechanism is simple: a first tax can be levied at source in the country of the issuer, then France in turn taxes these income on the return. This is not always a final double taxation because the tax treaty and the tax credit often limit its effect. Still, we have to report the right amounts in the right place.
Why Trade Republic dividends can be taxed twice
Trade Republic is only the intermediary through which you hold your securities. Tax depends mainly on three elements: your tax residence, the country of the company that pays the dividend and the type of account used. If you are a French tax resident and you hold an American, German or Dutch share, the dividend may first be subject to a withholding tax in the country of the issuer.

Secondly, France imposes income from movable capital. On an ordinary security account, the default regime is usually the Single flat-rate levy (SFP), often called flat tax, at the overall rate of 30%. This rate includes: 12,8% income tax and 17,2% social contributions.
The role of the tax treaty
The tax convention between France and the foreign country serves to prevent the same dividend from being taxed without limits in two states. In practice, it may cap withholding at the foreign source and grant entitlement to a tax credit in France. This credit does not make the dividend non-taxable, it simply allows the tax already levied abroad to be taken into account in the French calculation.
Simplified example: you receive a 100 gross foreign dividend €. A withholding tax is applied abroad and then France calculates taxation according to its rules. The tax credit reduces the corresponding French tax within the limits provided. The issue is therefore not only to look at the net dividend received on the application, but to keep the gross detail, foreign withholding and the country of origin.
IBAN French or foreign: what it really changes
Many investors associate trade republic taxation with the issue of IBAN. This is important, but there are two issues to be distinguished: the possible reporting of an account abroad and the taxation of investment income. The transition from a German IBAN to a French IBAN may alleviate certain reporting obligations, but it does not remove taxation on foreign dividends.
Report your income received abroad (Form 2047) · Access the official form to report your income collected outside France and regularize your tax situation.
| Situation | Main obligation | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign IBAN | Report the account via Form 3916 | Do not forget the account, even without significant dividends |
| French IBAN | Report taxable income by nature | Foreign withholding remains possible on dividends |
| Foreign actions on CTO | Report dividends and any tax credit | Check gross, net and retained amounts |
Form 3916 is not used to report dividends
The Form 3916 is used to report an account opened, held, used or closed abroad. It does not replace the income tax return. If your account is affected, the existence of the account and any dividends or interest received must be treated separately. It is a frequent confusion: check or fill in 3916 is not enough to regularize income taxes.
Conversely, if your situation no longer requires the reporting of a foreign account, you still have to check the income generated by your securities. An American or German dividend remains a foreign source income, even if your interface is in French and your cash account has a French IBAN.
Reporting Trade Republic income without losing the tax credit
The safest method is from the tax summary provided by the broker and then compare it with your transaction history. You must identify any gross dividends, withholding tax and interest. Useful forms may include the main return, supplementary return and foreign income forms.
The forms to know
For foreign income, the Form 2047 is generally used to carry forward income received outside France and the corresponding tax credits. The Form 2042 C may intervene for certain income or additional returns. The main declaration shall then include the amounts in the appropriate boxes. Official forms are available from the site impots.gouv.fr.
The objective is not to report only the net amount received. If you only indicate what happens after foreign withholding, you may miscalculate the calculation and not benefit properly from the tax credit. Tax logic often reason from gross income and then apply correction mechanisms.
A simple method in 5 checks
- List the dividends received by country of origin of the company.
- Collect the gross amount, foreign withholding and net amount.
- Check to see if a tax credit is specified or can be calculated according to the applicable tax treaty.
- Report foreign income in the appropriate forms, including 2047 if necessary.
- Keep Trade Republic proofs in case of application by the tax administration.
The logic is always the same: a gross amount, a foreign withholding, and then an adjustment in France. If any of these elements are missing in your return, the calculation may become false. In practice, clearly separating each step makes it possible to know where tax has already been levied and where it remains to be reported.
Flat tax or progressive scale: arbitration that can change the result
On an ordinary securities account, the flat tax of 30% is often the most readable solution. It includes income tax on 12,8% and social contributions 17,2%. But you can sometimes opt for progressive scale Income tax, which then applies globally to the income concerned and not only to a line chosen for its benefit.
40% discount and deductible CSG
With the progressive scale, certain dividends can benefit from a 40% discountUnder conditions. This may be of interest to low-tax taxpayers. Another thing to know: a fraction of CSG can be deductible, up to 6,8%, when income is taxed on the scale. These parameters make the comparison less obvious than a simple "30% against my tax bracket".
However, the progressive scale is not automatically more advantageous. Account must be taken of your marginal rate, all your financial income, social contributions and the overall effect of the option. A simulation in your tax space or with an advisor can avoid a bad surprise, especially if you hold multiple brokers or foreign lines.
CTO, PEA and common mistakes to avoid with Trade Republic
The ordinary securities account (CTO) is the most flexible envelope: it allows to buy many international shares, but dividends and capital gains are taxed according to traditional rules. It is in this context that double taxation is most visible, as foreign dividends can combine withholding tax with French taxation.
The Share Savings Plan (ESP), when used, meets a different logic: the tax advantage relates to the envelope and depends in particular on compliance with the conditions specific to the EAP. It is more restrictive on eligible securities, but can be more interesting for an investor oriented European shares and long horizon. The comparison is therefore not limited to the tax rate: it also depends on your target markets, your length of detention and your need for flexibility.
| Envelope | Main asset | Tax limit to be monitored |
|---|---|---|
| CTO | Wide access to foreign actions | Dividends subject to UFP or scale, with foreign deduction possible |
| PEA | Specific tax framework if conditions are met | More limited investment universe and envelope-specific rules |
The most expensive mistakes
The first error is to ignore withholding tax and to believe that the net amount received is fiscally sufficient. The second is to forget Form 3916 when a foreign account has to be reported. The third is not to properly claim or postpone the tax credit, which amounts to accepting a heavier tax than necessary.
Another trap is to combine interest, dividends and capital gains. These revenues do not always have the same boxes or proofs. Finally, avoid mechanical copying a tutorial found online without checking your own situation: IBAN, title country, account type and flat tax or scale option can change the procedure.
The right approach is based on three reflexes: keeping the trade republic tax documents, checking the country-by-country amounts and using the appropriate forms. Double taxation is not a fatality, but it requires a coherent declaration. If the amounts become significant or you have more than one account, a professional's opinion can be quickly profitable.
