Halal Islamic ETF: check the sharia before comparing costs

A halal Islamic ETF makes it possible to invest in a basket of companies selected according to sharia compliance criteria. But its name is not enough: it is necessary to check the filtering applied, the operation of the fund and the treatment of non-compliant revenues. In France, the purchase usually takes place through a security account, with an availability that depends on the broker.

What a Halal ETF really changes in your investment

An ETF is an indexed fund: its shares buy on the stock exchange and it seeks to reproduce the performance of an index. In its Islamic version, this index includes only companies that follow a methodology of religious and financial selection. You thus have an exposure to several companies without selecting each share yourself.

Family indices such as MSCI Islamic, S&P Shariah, Dow Jones Islamic Market and FTSE Islamic organise this selection. However, their rules are not identical: two funds bearing the reference « Islamic » may have different compositions, even in a comparable geographical area.

The main advantage is practical: the selection and revisions of the index are mutualised. However, halal does not mean guaranteed capital or insured yield. A compliant stock fund remains exposed to market declines. Nor is it confused with an ETF ESG, whose environmental and social criteria do not necessarily meet the requirements of Islamic finance.

Compliance is verified in documents, not in name

Two filters to examine together

Sector screening excludes alcohol, pork, gambling, pornography, tobacco and conventional banking and insurance. Armaments is also included in exclusions according to methodologies. For a company with multiple activities, selection also depends on the nature and proportion of the income concerned.

Official methodology of Islamic indices MSCI · Consult the Shariah rules and criteria governing the construction of the Islamic MSCI indices.

Financial screening examines, inter alia, interest-bearing debt, relevant liquidity or investments and non-compliant income. Thresholds are often cited around 33% for certain debt or liquidity ratios and 5% for non-compliant revenues. These are not universal rules: the denominator used and the calculation methods vary according to the index provider. The exact methodology should therefore be read rather than apply these percentages in isolation.

Religious control, replication and purification

Consult the index methodology, the fund prospectus and its sharia compliance documents. Identify the religious committee or oversight mechanism and then check what is actually covered. A validation of the index does not exempt an examination of the structure of the ETF, its possible securities loans and its liquidity management.

Physical replication involves holding securities, while synthetic replication uses financial contracts to achieve the desired performance. This difference deserves a specific religious verification; It is not a technical preference.

The purification refers to the residual portion of income considered to be non-compliant. Check if it is done at the fund level or if you are still responsible for a process. Do not deduct that a capitalizing ETF automatically resolves this question. In case of doubt, have the documents examined by a competent person in Islamic finance.

ETFs to be sought from France, according to the desired exposure

The funds below are concrete avenues to be sought by a French or European intermediary. Their presence in the catalogue and their accessibility to a French individual must be confirmed : a quotation in Europe does not guarantee their distribution to all brokers.

ETF Exposure sought Point of vigilance
iShares MSCI World Islamic UCITS ETF Actions of developed markets World index does not cover emerging markets
iShares MSCI USA Islamic UCITS ETF US actions Single country concentration
iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Islamic UCITS ETF Emerging market actions Geopolitical, monetary and market risks
HSBC MSCI World Islamic ESG UCITS ETF Developed markets with Islamic selection and ESG Additional filters that can significantly change the portfolio

For each fund, record on the official card the exact share, current costs, index, distribution policy and listing places. ISIN avoids confusing two parts or two products with close names. As the fees and features may evolve, a recent official card is preferable to a fixed classification.

The TER, or total cost ratio, represents the annual costs incurred by the fund. Some offers show levels around 0.30% to 0.35% per year, to be checked for each part. Add the broker's commissions, any exchange fees and the difference between purchase and sale prices. The lowest TER fund is not necessarily the least expensive for your purchases.

CTO, PEA, life insurance: distinguishing the fund from its envelope

The ordinary securities account, or CTO, is generally the most direct way to buy an accessible Islamic ETF in France. It offers a wide range of media, but income and capital gains are taxed for your situation. The compliance of the fund does not remove these tax obligations.

For the PEA, never assume eligibility for a halal ETF. The global funds cited should not be considered eligible without explicit confirmation. Tax eligibility and religious compliance meet two distinct sets of rules.

Life insurance or a PER may offer compliant supports, depending on the contract. It is necessary to examine the costs of the contract, the actually available supports, the exit conditions and the overall structure. The presence of a halal ETF is not sufficient to qualify the entire contract as compliant.

Think of your investment as a bubble whose walls must be inspected, not just the content. The stock basket can be compliant, while the account activates cash remuneration, a credit facility or a securities loan. Before opening, ask which mechanisms are automatic and which can be deactivated: this peripheral check avoids neglecting what happens between two purchases.

Buy without confusing diversification with no risk

Exclusions change the sectoral distribution: an Islamic ETF may be more exposed to certain large firms or sectors than a conventional index. Adding multiple funds does not necessarily correct this imbalance. For example, an ETF World and an ETF USA can hold many common positions.

Consider the main lines, their weight, geographical distribution and exposure to currencies. A quotation in euro shall not remove the foreign exchange risk associated with the companies held. Also compare the index tracking gap and trading conditions, not just past performance.

  1. Define the use of money: do not expose to shares a necessary sum in the short term.
  2. Validate compliance: Keep the documents and cleaning instructions.
  3. Look for the part by his ISIN: check the key information document and fees before ordering.
  4. Check the price: a limited price order allows you to set your maximum purchase price, without guaranteeing its execution.
  5. Organize the follow-up: monitor changes in methodology, fees and portfolio suitability for your goal.

The right choice is not necessarily the most advanced fund recently. It is the one whose religious selection, costs and risks you understand, and which you can keep despite fluctuations. These benchmarks do not replace a personalized financial advice or a religious advice tailored to your requirements.
